Linaje

The nuevo flamenco catalan (new-style flamenco from Catalonia) has a new ambassador. His name, Juaneke. And his first recording for Harmonia Mundi, “Linaje”, is all that you would expect from this protégé of the much sought-after guitarist Chicuelo, and more. Relying on a basically traditional line-up of musicians, backing-singers and palmas, Juaneke’s compositions are both pure flamenco and yet resolutely modern. And Chicuelo’s expert touch accompanying on the guitar and sitar accentuate the impression of a subtle balance between strength and finesse throughout. The album’s fine arrangements, heart-felt lung-busting cries full of the duende of the flamenco singer and catchy chorus-lines make for an unusually mature-sounding debut. Que arte !
